Ruukki provided panels and design service for Metsä Group’s pulp terminal in Vuosaari

Ruukki supplied the wall panels for Metsä Group’s pulp terminal at Vuosaari Harbour in Helsinki. The terminal will store pulp from Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Äänekoski. Ruukki delivered a total of 7,000 square metres, about the size of a football pitch, of sandwich panels for the 400-metre long and 80-metre wide building. A sandwich panel is a pre-fabricated wall element which has an insulation layer between two steel sheets.

The design service and delivery reliability were Ruukki’s strengths in delivery. Ruukki was responsible for design and optimised the panels for various parts of the building so that they were also cost effective from the customer’s perspective. The pulp terminal is located on next to the sea, which means a demanding terrain category. Since the building is exposed to greater wind loads than normal, the corner sections required thicker than normal steel sheets. Three different thicknesses of steel sheet were used in the building. Ruukki is able to manufacture and develop large quantities of panels to an agreed schedule and has experience of similar construction projects.

The terminal, which can store 80,000 tonnes of pulp, will be brought into use when production at Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Äänekoski comes on stream in mid-August 2017. The terminal will serve as an interim storage facility before the pulp is shipped around the world.

The sandwich panels were installed by Inmarx Partners, a firm authorised by Ruukki. Installation began in September 2016 and was completed in November the same year.
